The Typical Filipino: Summer by Sheance Hermosa

Every race has a different way in celebrating the Summer Season. Heat takes place and humidity rises. But a typical Filipino family celebrates it this way. And my whole clan did this type of celebration once again for a very looooong time. I mean, everything’s changed. Filipino tradition changes from time to time, and mostly, we imitate the western culture. I am not against it, but lets not lose something that makes us a Filipino.

Anyway, a typical Filipino summer always starts with renting a JEEPNEY from the house to the destination, if the family doesn’t own a car that could fit everyone in. The casting always, and is included from the oldest generation to the latest. Sometimes, lucky neighbors get the chance to be included in the fun.

Everyone will pack up all things, food to cook, and drinks.

Sometimes, guys bring their guitars to charade the infinite seas and sing their hearts out, imparting sentiments, wishing. Or just simply singing while getting close to be drunk.

Upon arriving, kids start to get more excited. In my case before, when there were less resorts and more free, clean and less crowd, I remember running towards the beach front and go dipping in the cold waters…. reminiscent…

Anyway, today’s generation is quite like that… only you have to stop before the entrance to pay before you could go inside… of course. But well, there are now less free beaches out there.

But when everything ISN’T settle yet, kids then take off their clothes and dip. Just like the old days. And the older are then grilling, in English or SUGBA in bisaya.

That’s my cousin playing with the sand.

Well, as you can see, kids play… you know, kids.

Another thing kids do with the sand is bury their legs, and sometimes make it as a lotion and pretend to be fair….

And sometimes, older women take the youngest in the clan, and first timers, to take the first dipping in the beach.

Like what my mother did to my niece. She took her to her first time in the beach.

Of course, the youngsters aren’t accustomed with the new environment. They’ll always be shocked at the beginning resulting to necessary cries and screams. Like my very lovable niece.

Poor niece… haha!

Anyway, the next phase is the lunch… the very delicious lunch. Well, a typical Filipino lunch is composed of Sinugbang Baboy (Grilled Pork), Sinugbang Isda (Grilled Fish), and could have PANCIT, Guso, KINILAW, together with rice but we prefer PUSO. It is complemented with Mango and COCA-COLA. And oooh boy, you will have the most sumptuous Summer!

But in our case, we have diverted a little, and have these dishes instead!

The Sinugbang Bangus/Isda. It is the milk fish in English, and what it consist is just pure delicious-ness.

The Pancit, or you could spell that as Pansit. Well as you can see, it turns out (always) to be a hit!

The Dugo-Dugo… just click the link to know what it is and the recipe. It’s quite bizarre to have dugo-dugo in a summer escapade, but my grandfather really likes it, so as my aunts and uncles…

AND LASTLY!

THE NEVER FADING.

ALWAYS WINNING.

LECHON

yes… drool, baby. But this Cebuano Lechon is the apple of the eye to every person that is present. Yes, it is the queen in every celebration. We might not have the Sinugbang Baboy, but we have this…

After everything has been set, it’s time to clutter the Lechon, tear its insides feeling like it’s famine.

BUT this heavenly celebration wouldn’t be completed without the vinegar named PINAKURAT. Everyone who can read this blog has got to definitely try Pinakurat. It is a very special vinegar that will take you from earth to the whole universe for it’s deliciousness.

yeah, that’s how we do it.. ^_^

And we don’t eat with spoon and fork… We eat with our bare hands (so primitive, it’s pinoy style haha)

And we can’t deny, the cola with large cold ice.

But, to culminate the sumptuous lunch, we always finish it with mangoes to tear away the aftertaste of the food.

Wow, perfect summer outing, isn’t it?

And right after that, everyone’s up for the beach and dip once more to taste the good summer sun. And right after that, we pack up to go home, and that’s a sad part tho. But well, we always bring the good memories that we can cherish for the rest of our lives. I just hope we could bring back those reminiscent times we had before. But now, everyone’s leaving and go far, far away from each family member to have a good life. But well anyway, it was fun.

But it didn’t stopped there, we stopped by a local Halo-Halo store named RAZONS and GOD! It was delicious! I don’t usually get impressed with Halo-halo, but it was the best.

That’s me with the Halo-Halo.

But this escapade will not be complete with a group photo….

It was very enjoyable and memorable, I hope we can have this again soon, cuz everyone will be away for quite a while.

But that was the Typical Filipino Summer.
